Hired the Gilwern Princess from Nigel and Sally at Roadhouse Narrowboats. Excellent pack arrived well before the trip detailing the on-board inventory, a brilliantly useful and detailed map book of the canal, and links as to how to operate the locks and general canal craft.
Upon arrival we were warmly greeted and shown to our boat. Once we were unpacked on board Nigel gave us a thorough briefing on the operation of the boat and its systems, then to ensure we were confident he stayed on board for the first half mile , checking that we could navigate under one of the lowest bridges, then with a wave he was off and we chugged off toward the (rarely seen) sunset and Brecon.
The canal is extremely shallow and the boats at Roundhouse have been specially designed to navigate this canal. They are shorter and have a V shaped hull , which can help when pulling in close to the edge due to the shallow nature of the canal.
We managed to get to Brecon then back down to Goytre and return to Gilwern comfortably in the week, with plenty of stops for pubs and provisions and sightseeing.
Would thoroughly recommend and use Roadhouse again, our only criticism is that the charging facility for phones etc was not brilliant with only one socket and a constant bleeping noise when in use,… so next time we will take solar back up facilities.
