Combine your narrowboat holiday with a visit to Britain’s Best High Street 2018

April 14, 2019

Crickhowell has recently been voted Britain’s Best High Street in the Great British High Street Awards from a short list of 37 towns throughout the UK. This bustling town is one of the last places in the UK that is free from major retailers. It can boast independent stores throughout, including Wales’ first zero waste store. The judges were impressed with the strong community spirit of the town and the way it has transformed its high street with local businesses offering local produce and goods. Their Totally Locally campaign through social media has encouraged local residents to shop locally and to support their local businesses, which in turn has led to new businesses being developed. This strong community spirit has even led to local residents coming together to buy a local pub in order to stop it being sold to a national chain or brewery. This has now been converted into three more locally run shops with three flats above, an impressive feat when other high streets are suffering with the closure of shops and businesses.

Crickhowell-High-Street

The bustling high street offers plenty of choice to visitors with an independent bookshop, boutique, Crickhowell adventure as well as a florist, butchers, bakery, off-licence and general stores. Webb & Sons who have been trading in the town since 1936 stock everything you could possibly need for your home or garden and their staff will always make you feel welcome. Add to this, cafes, pubs, art galleries and Crickhowell Castle and you really can’t afford to miss out on a visit
